Monday May-Hem

It was a Super Overload of music, hype, football, and analysis. When it was all said and done the New Orleans Saints won one for the city. How many times have I said that over 150 plays in a football game it always seems to come down to two or three. The two plays people will remember while they were double dipping their chips were the onside kick and the Manning pick. But way before those two outcomes changed history, remember…the Colts were driving up 10-3 and Pierre Garcon mishandled a Peyton toss at 3rd and short in the second quarter. 17-3 or even 13-3 might have made a huge difference.

One other note…

When Sean Payton called “Ambush”, the Saints onside kick play during half-time Thomas Morstead, a 23 year old rookie had the entire half-time to think about it. Payton told the media 67% of the time that play works. Wasn’t it ironic that The Who closed their half time, laser filled set with “Won’t Get Fooled Again? Guess what? Colts got fooled again. The onside kick was a perfect execution of a play that was practiced only a few times during the week.

Then of course…the pick. Tracy Porter had studied enough film that when Austin Collie went in motion the second round draft pick out of Indiana knew what was coming and that Manning would be looking for Reggie Wayne close to the first down marker. A catch and 74 yards later Porter, who also picked off Brett Favre in the NFC title game, ran and pointed carrying his team to victory. Game, Set, Match!

With all of that…New Orleans wins it all for the first time in their 43 years of NFL futility. It made for great theatre, and for those of us without power and blistered shovel hands…the game took our minds off our historic winter weather.

See you today at 3pm. MM

The Friday Frenzy

Who dropped the snow globe? Quick, what was the name of the movie, starring Richard Gere that involved a snow globe? Why I would think of that now is beyond me.

Show rocks today with me, in-studio, driving the rocketship. Why…my producer, World B…is stuck on his family’s farm with three dogs. Hopefully things go well today.

Virginia Tech became the aggressor last night and proved the Carolina game was more important to them. Down the stretch with Malcolm Delaney in foul trouble the Hokies pulled together and overcame the Tar Heels comeback. Tech is now 11-0 at home this year.

Will Virginia reschedule the Wake game tomorrow? Good question. Slated for a noon start the weather is playing havoc with events like this and this afternoon we willgive you an update.

Super Bowl? Wish I was in Miami…but I have to give Peyton Manning the edge as well as my good friend Jim Caldwell. Colts 35-28.

More today at 3pm.

Answer: Unfaithful. Diane Lane was beyond hot.

Thursday Thirst…What Did We Learn?

We all wake up this morning trying to put a finger on what we learned from signing day. Who made the headlines and which schools made an impact in an effort to become a factor in 2010…if not nationally in their respective leagues. We spoke to several people over the past week and I think we can narrow down some headlines from yesterdays college football signing day. Here’s an edited list:

Florida State and Miami made impacts in the ACC.
Virginia’s class was average, but there are a few kids who will help immediately. The jury is still out on Morgan Moses and whether he will be able to “cut through” the Cavaliers academic system.
Virginia Tech is still Virginia Tech. Every class the Hokies sign seems to come up a bit better than the next one. VT had one of the top 5 classes in the ACC.
Mickey Mathews at JMU was elated over his class and added a lot of speed for the Dukes. The coup was the signing of the two quarterbacks from Texas. Mickey also told us that if you actually got “shelled” in recruiting coaches on the inside would know…fans would not.
Temple’s Al Golden received 27 signatures so they will prep a couple guys. Golden said that the Owls never missed a beat despite his name surfacing for several jobs in the off season. Golden knows Temple “has a story to tell”.

Richmond’s Latrell Scott was pleased with the Spider’s first effort under his direction. USC transfer qb Aaron Corps might have made a difference according to Scott, but he will still have to fight for the job in the spring.

We also learned yesterday schools like Florida, Texas, and Oklahoma hit home runs in their overall signings. West Virginia’s class was very impressive and Derek Dooley made up ground for Tennessee after the Kiffin departure.

We also learned that national signing day is an event and there is a ton of interest. But as Aaron Clark, former Virginia defensive captain and Inbounds analyst told us, “Once the kids step on campus the stars are gone.”

We will recap signing day today, breakdown the UVA win over NC State in basketball, take a deep breath and brace for another snow event.

See you at 3. MM
